Is God a Moral Monster?
December 8, 2010
My dear friend and colleague, Paul Copan, just released his latest book, Is God a Moral Monster: Making Sense of the Old Testament God (Baker, 2010).
Paul is the President of the Evangelical Philosophical Society and a first-rate philosopher and theologian.
Frankly, he is the nation's leading apologist regarding problems with the biblical text, and Is God a Moral Monster? is vintage Copan. The book takes on New Atheist biblical critics and powerfully addresses virtually every criticism they have raised, including:
- God is a narcissist.
- God punishes people too harshly.
- God is guilty of ethnic cleansing.
- God oppresses women.
- God endorses slavery.
- Christianity causes violence.
I know of no other book like this one, and it should be required reading on college and seminary courses on biblical introduction.
To learn more about the book, read Paul's interview with Joe Gorra at the EPS website.

Hey, thanks, JP! I appreciate your noting my book at your blogsite and for pointing people to the review at the EPS website.
Keep up the excellent work!
Few Christians would admit to having a serious issue with God in The Old Testament … I suspect many harbor secret issues with the ways of God in the Old Testament. .I did until I gained clarity and understanding of much of the text. Thank you thank you for dealing head on with this issue!! I cannot wait to buy this book. God has really used you as his anointed vessel to bring clarity and defense to the loving nature and attributes of our great God.
That was thanks to JP Moreland as well as Paul Copan. Paul and JP I pray that Larry King calls you or CNN next time there is a major disaster and they question God. Much of the time they have people trying to act as Apologetic Ministers that have no valid point or defense, when that happens I feel like throwing my shoe at the TV set, instead I will just ask God to expand your platform on national secular programs and broadcasting.
Keep up your awesome Ministries, we need you Vocal Generals within our Lords body.
Thanks for the book recommendation. Love what you continue to do with your life and skills brother. Thanks for your impact on my life. Tell Hope I said hello.
Thanks, S. Anne, for your encouraging comments. I too have been dismayed at some of these public Christian “defenders.” on shows like *Larry King Live*.
Lee Strobel just notified me that he is very excited about the *Moral Monster* book and is hoping to promote it in every way he can; so, who knows–maybe folks like Larry King will somehow get wind of the book after all!
Let me know what you think of the book when you’re done with it.
I love that everyone seems to be talking about this book! It is such an important topic as it addresses issues that come up all the time and it is so accessible; earlier today my 15 year old son was reading it saying “oh this is great, I can use it on the forum I am debating atheists on.” Matt has had to prise it off him so he can get the final version read right through and get onto his review of it for MandM.
